Within Reason

Objective

Transitioning from shorts to my first indie feature was a massive, nerve-wracking leap. After spending months writing the screenplay, I finally secured the funding for this self-made project and jumped at the chance to bring it to life. The goal was to push past those "first-timer" jitters and prove that a compelling, full-length story could be told effectively even with very limited resources.

Since we were working with a pretty minimal budget, I teamed up with a producer who was great at finding a crew and cast of talented indie folks who were willing to join in.

We had to be incredibly strategic with our time, knocking out the entire shoot in just 10 days. To make that work, we stayed mostly in one primary location, which helped us keep the momentum going.

The real heavy lifting happened in post-production. Working with a two-camera setup gave us plenty of coverage, but it also meant I spent months in the edit suite sifting through a mountain of footage.

This was also my first time manually syncing sound for every single take, which was a massive learning curve. On top of the edit, I handled the digital VFX for the gunfights to make sure the action felt authentic despite our limited resources.

Approach

Result

In the end, we managed to pull off a complete feature film on a shoestring budget. It was a huge "trial by fire" moment, but it worked.

Beyond just having a finished movie to show for it, the biggest takeaway was the power of collaboration and actually trusting more than one person with major responsibilities and hope all goes well and things are followed up on with care and precision. I learned that when you have a team of people who are all-in on the vision, you can bridge the gap between a small budget and a big screen result.
